Four people have been killed after a truck and a car collided on New Zealand's State Highway 1 north of Wellington.

The country's main motorway was closed for more than four hours after the crash at around 3pm NZDT on Tuesday, roughly an hour's drive north of the capital.

Police have not yet revealed further details, and have appealed to the public for further information about the crash.

Horowhenua mayor Bernie Wanden told Radio NZ that the section of road on which the incident happened was "notorious and dangerous" with a history of tragic accidents.
