Former prime minister John Howard taken to hospital

Former prime minister John Howard is recovering after undergoing emergency surgery for appendicitis.

Mr Howard was taken to hospital in Sydney after visiting a doctor. it is understood the doctor advised Mr Howard to take an ambulance to hospital.

The screenshot Mr Fordham shared to Twitter said Mr Howard “had a sudden attack of appendicitis” and that the former PM was “recovering well” following an operation.

“He [Mr Howard] thanks everyone for their good wishes and particularly thanks the staff at Royal North Shore Private for their excellent care,” the screenshot says.

The 81-year-old ex-Liberal leader was treated for a heart condition in 2015 when he had two stents inserted.

A spokesman for his office said the condition was not coronavirus-related.

According to Seven News, Mr Howard was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital’s emergency department after the doctor called an ambulance just before 11am.

Mr Howard served as Australia’s prime minister from 1996 until 2007 and he is Australia’s oldest living Prime Miniser.
