Former NFL player Aaron Hernandez found dead in jail cell

Aaron Hernandez, the former New England Patriots star convicted of murder, has killed himself in his prison cell, according to officials.

Hernandez was found in his cell by corrections officers about 3am local time at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center, Massachusetts Department of Correction officials have said.

He was taken to UMASS Leominster Hospital but was pronounced dead at 4:07am local time.

Hernandez, 27, was housed in a cell on his own.

An investigation is ongoing.

Hernandez was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd.

He was arrested in August 2013 in connection with Lloyd's June 2013 death and is serving a life sentence.

Just last week, he was acquitted of the 2012 killings of two men in Boston.

Hernandez was on a $40 million (US) five-year contract with the New England Patriots before he was cut from the team.
