Former Home and Away actor is arrested after allegedly assaulting police officer

Former Home and Away actor Joel McIlroy was arrested on Tuesday in Sydney for allegedly assaulting a female police constable.

The 46-year-old approached police on Rutland Street, in Surry Hills, just after 11am while officers were arresting another man involved in a separate incident, according to police.

After being ushered away from the area, Mr McIlroy allegedly shoulder-charged a female senior constable.

“Police attempted to arrest the man and a struggle ensued, during which the man and two officers fell to the ground,” officers said in a press release on Wednesday.

“The 29-year-old officer sustained injuries to her face, neck and shoulder after allegedly being punched repeatedly,” police said.

During the scuffle, Mr McIlroy and two officers fell over a fence barricade, according to 9News.

A passer-by helped police detain the 46-year-old and he was later charged with two counts of assault officer in execution of duty, resist officer in execution of duty, and wilfully obstruct officer in execution of duty.

He was refused bail at the Central Local Court on Wednesday.

The female officer has been released from hospital but is still suffering from bruising and swelling, 9News reported.

Mr McIlroy grew up on Sydney’s northern beaches and began performing in musicals at the age of 16, according to IMDb.

He joined the cast of Home and Away as Flynn Saunders, replacing Martin Dingle Wall, in 1988.

He later starred in guest roles in Water Rats, All Saints and ABC’s Love Is a Four-Letter Word.

More to come.
