A former South Australian National Football League star has been jailed for six years, for child sex offences that occurred 25 years ago.

Trevor Grimwood, who won the 1977 Magarey Medal, the League's highest individual honour, while playing for West Adelaide.

But a court had heard eight years on, in 1985, he had sex with a 14-year-old girl.

His lawyer had previously asked for a sentence with a 'merciful' non-parole period, but the prosecution at the time argued that Grimwood had shown no remorse.

Today, Judge Dean Clayton sided with the prosecution.

"You were a successful league footballer," he told Grimwood,

"She (the victim) adored and idolised you and had an unrealistic expectation that she'd be in a (future) relationship with you."

"You were in a position of trust, in the position of a parent."

"You had a duty to protect her."

Grimwood will serve a non-parole period of two and a half years.
