Former Australian rowing representative Georgia Nesbitt has been admitted to hospital after suffering serious injuries during a road cycling event on Friday night in Hobart.

The 30-year-old was put in an induced coma but is said to be in a stable condition, after the crash during a criterium race.

An eight-time national champion and world championship silver medallist who was part of the national team at last year's world titles, Nesbitt was treated on site before being transported to hospital via ambulance.

Rowing Australia boss Ian Robson said the sport was rallying around Nesbitt and her family.

"Georgia is one of the most-respected athletes in Australian rowing," Robson said in a statement.

"The entire rowing family and wider sports community is thinking of Georgia and her family in the wake of this serious accident and offering its ongoing support and assistance to her family."

A qualified solicitor, Nesbitt was this year appointed to the board of Rowing Tasmania.

The Australian rowing team were rocked in 2005 when another beloved former team member, Amy Gillett, died in a training accident when she was hit by a car after transitioning into cycling.
