Football fans unimpressed with Lorraine Kelly presenting Euros coverage
The Scottish daytime presenter travelled to Munich and appeared in ITV's pre-match coverage of the Scotland Vs Germany match.
What did you miss?
Football fans were unhappy with ITV's choice of presenter for the first Euro 2024 match - when they turned on their TVs to see Lorraine Kelly.
The tournament began in Munich on Friday 14 June with Scotland playing Germany. And ahead of the match, ITV chose to air build up featuring Scottish daytime TV presenter Kelly. Viewers expressed their surprise and disappointment in ITV's choice of Scottish pundits, ridiculing Kelly's predictions for the match. And her name quickly began trending on social media.
What, how, and why?
The UEFA Euro Championship began with Scotland playing Germany in Munich on Friday night, before England take to the pitch on Sunday. Kelly was absent from her morning show Lorraine on Friday and travelled to Munich to discuss Scotland's chances in the Euros. In the pre-match build up, following an interview with England manager Gareth Southgate, coverage was presented by retired Scottish footballer Graeme Souness and featured a lengthy chat with Kelly, wearing a red tartan coat.
Kelly, 64, is a longtime football fan an avid Dundee United supporter. She once said: "Football brought me to Dundee. The first time I came here was with my husband Steve to watch Hearts playing Dundee United at Tannadice. It was our first date, in 1985."
What did viewers say?
Viewers were unimpressed with Kelly as a football pundit.
One posted on social media platform X: "@itvfootball there is not a football fan in the world that cares what Lorraine Kelly has to say about football! Why is football coverage not aimed at the people that actually watch it?" Another said: "ITV rolling out Lorraine Kelly as the token Scot." And another wrote: "First game of the Euros and we are listening to Lorraine Kelly being interviewed #euro2024 #GERSCO"
Some were skeptical of her knowledge of the game, as she predicted Scotland would win 2-1.
But other viewers were open to seeing Kelly's familiar smile on their screens ahead of the game.
One wrote: "I talk about football the way lorraine kelly talks about football lovely boys helping eachother" And another posted: "Lorraine Kelly says “COME ON, YOU JOCKS!” #TheFootball"
The Euros 2024 group stages continue until Wednesday 26 June. The final will take place on Sunday 14 July.
