Elon Musk leaves football world in frenzy after huge Man United claim

SpaceX and Tesla billionaire Elon Musk has sent the football world into meltdown after tweeting he would buy Manchester United after fans have called for new owners.

United have suffered a horrible start to the season under new manager Erik ten Hag after losing to Brighton, before an embarrassing 4-0 loss to Brentford.

Sitting at the bottom of the table, it is the worst start for a United since 1992.

Not only are United at the bottom of the table for the first time in 30 years, the loss to Brentford marked the first time the club has lost seven consecutive away fixtures since 1936.

The shocking result prompted a rare public statement from Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST), who condemned the club’s owners for a ‘decade of decline’ after a performance they described as ‘humiliating’.

Fans have been calling for new owners, to replace the Glazer family, for some time after years of mismanagement.

And in a move that sent football fans into a frenzy, Musk claimed he would buy the club.

"Also, I'm buying Manchester United ur [sic] welcome," Musk wrote.

Musk appears to be only joking to cause a stir on Twitter having joked about buying other companies in the past.

However, it didn't stop fans quickly joking about the bizarre piece of news circulating the football world.

Manchester United in football disarray

Manchester finished sixth last year, outside of Champions League football qualification, which was the club's worst result in the Premier League era.

The Glazer family - American owners who also own The Tampa Bay Buccaneers - have long been the target of fans for the downfall of England's most successful club in the Premier League era.

Musk sold more than $US6.9 million worth of Tesla stock this week.

This would offer him enough to buy Manchester United after the Glazer family valued the club at $4 million last year.

Musk's joke appears to have momentarily taken the attention away from Manchester's on-field dramas.

But United legend Gary Neville was left seething on the weekend after watching his team get demolished once again.

“At this moment in time, it’s really desperate. There’s no leadership, there’s no voice, you can’t blame the individual player or the manager, you’ve got to look above and look to the very top,” Neville said.

“This week, they’re going to get peppered those players, the coach, the sporting department, the new CO – they’re all going to get peppered. But there’s a family over there in America who are just literally letting their employees take all the hits for them – and that is unforgivable.

“Joel Glazer has got to get on a plane … get over to Manchester and he’s got to start to divert the issues away from the club and tell everybody what the hell this plan is with the football club. What is he doing?”
