Fitness Influencer in ICU After Getting Shot During Robbery

A popular fitness influencer and gym chain owner was shot during an attempted robbery in Bel Air.

Miguel Angel Aguilar’s company, Self Made Training Facility, posted an Instagram message about the Friday, Sept. 13, shooting.

“We are heartbroken to share that Miguel was involved in a serious incident last night,” the Instagram post read. “He sustained a gunshot injury and is currently fighting bravely in the intensive care unit.”

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers were called to the 11000 block of Thurston Circle in Bel-Air around 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 13. Police said four male suspects “approached the victim and demanded the victim’s property,” LAPD officer Kevin Terzes tells PEOPLE. “One suspect produced a handgun and fired multiple times striking the victim.”

Police did not identify Aguilar by name.

Terzes says the suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle. The shooting is not believed to be gang-related, he says.

Aguilar, 43, is the president and CEO of Self Made Training Facility, a chain of gyms with 26 locations across the country.

“Miguel is a beloved individual, and his strength, leadership, accomplishments, and resilience have inspired many,” according to the Instagram post. “We know that he is surrounded by the love and support of his family, friends, all of you, and we are confident in his ability to overcome this.”
