First MP caught under NZ travel laws

New Zealand Greens MP Chloe Swarbrick will miss parliament this week as she self-isolates after returning from Australia.

Ms Swarbrick is the first Kiwi parliamentarian to be caught by strict new rules laid down by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, prompted by the spread of coronavirus, for all international arrivals to quarantine themselves for a fortnight.

The 25-year-old political wunderkind does not believe she has COVID-19.

"I do not have any symptoms, but I am registering my whereabouts with the Ministry of Health and will be following advice," she said.

"These protocols were designed to keep everyone healthy."

Greens co-leader James Shaw said Ms Swarbrick would videoconference into meetings and work remotely.

"We'll miss Chloe's presence in Parliament but I'm sure she'll be back before long," he said.
