Firefighters rescue tiny kitten after car goes up in flames

NSW Firefighters have rescued a tiny kitten after a car went up in flames, just metres away.

The adorable cat was rescued on Sunday morning, as firefighters from the Sandy Point and Menai Fire Brigades battled the blaze on Heathcote Road near Sandy Point.

“We were most of the way through extinguishing the fire,” Dave Balangé, Deputy Captain of Menai Bush Fire Brigade told Yahoo7.

“I just caught a bit of movement out of the corner of my eye and looked down and there’s this kitten looking up at me.

“I went back to my truck and I had two very willing crew members who were quite happy to take her off my hands and look after her.”

The owners of the car were not hurt and watched the fire crews at work on the scene.

The cat, which vets estimate to be six to eight-weeks-old, was initially named ‘Alpha’, after the fire truck which was called Menai 1-Alpha.

“The kitten was in very good health when the crew found her, but was understandably a little bit agitated and was quite vocal,” another Menai Firefighter told Yahoo7.

“The crew did conduct a search of the area around where we found her, for signs of a litter or a mother.

“We didn’t find anything.

“The kitten spent a little bit of time at the station and had something to eat and drink in the common area where she was watched for a while.”

The kitten was cared for overnight at a firefighter’s home and taken to a local veterinarian the next morning.

“The vet gave Alpha a clean bill of health this morning and she was vaccinated and microchipped,” the firefighter said.

One of the firefighters adopted the kitten, who has been named ‘Phoenix’.
