Fire at Kyiv’s Cosmo Multimall started by 7-year-old boy, says police

A 7-year-old boy deliberately caused set a fire at the capital’s Cosmo Multimall (formerly Cosmopolit) shopping center, the Kyiv police reported on Jan. 14.

On Jan. 13, a fire occurred at the Cosmo Multimall shopping and entertainment center in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district. The State Emergency Service conducted the evacuation of 200 individuals from the mall.

The fire originated on the fourth floor in the children’s room, according to Mayor Vitalii Klitschko, with four people affected, including center employees and an eight-year-old girl suffering from smoke inhalation.

The boy and his parents were identified via an analysis of surveillance footage and are now being questioned at the Solomianskyi police department.

Investigators have launched a criminal case related to intentional destruction or property damage, carrying a potential sentence of up to ten years in prison.
