Fire kills 7 at COVID hospital in Egypt

Seven people have been killed and several others wounded in a fire at an Egyptian hospital for coronavirus patients north of Cairo.

The fire broke out at the intensive care unit of al-Amal hospital in the city of Obour, the provincial civil protection department said.

Two fire engines rushed to the site and other patients were evacuated.

The cause of the fire is not immediately clear. Prosecutors are investigating the incident.

Egypt has seen a surge in the number of COVID-19 infections and related deaths. On Friday, the Health Ministry reported 1133 new infections and 49 deaths.

The new figures bring the Arab world's most populous country's total number of cases to 130,126 and 7309 related deaths.
