A fire has broken out at an oil storage facility belonging to Indonesia's state-owned energy giant Pertamina in Central Java province, the company says.

The fire erupted after dusk at one of the tanks where petrol is stored at the facility in Cilacap district but the cause was not immediately known, said Ifki Sukarya, spokesperson for Pertamina's subsidiary Kilang Pertamina Internasional.

Pertamina said the fire started at one of the 228 petrol tanks used to accommodate crude at 7.20pm on Saturday.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Sukarya said people living in the vicinity were being relocated to safer areas.

A similar fire at a Pertamina refinery in neighbouring West Java province injured at least 20 people in March.
