Mat Ryan's teammate blasted for savage troll after World Cup 'nightmare'

Socceroos captain Mat Ryan has hit back at his Copenhagen FC club teammate Kamil Grabara after he took a dig at the Aussie for his mistake in the World Cup. Argentina took the lead against Australia after a Lionel Messi special. Australia were able to hold on and get to the half-time break in a bid to reset.

However, disaster struck in the second-half when captain Ryan suffered a brain fade that left the Socceroos reeling. The Socceroos opted to play the ball out from the back when it was passed back to Ryan.

Ryan could have blasted the ball back up field, but opted to take a touch. This put him under pressure from the on-rushing Argentinian forwards. The Australian goalkeeper was caught in possession, which gave young Man City striker Julian Alvarez an easy tap-in to hand Argentina a pivotal 2-0 lead.

The Socceroos captain cut a forlorn figure after the whistle with his error being described as a 'nightmare'. But the football world was left stunned when his club teammate weighed-in with a brutal comment.

Grabara and Ryan haven't enjoyed the best of relationships with the former playing as first choice in Copenhagen. The goalkeeper told Dutch media before the World Cup: “I can only repeat what I have already said – I just have to state that there is a reason why we are in ninth place in the Superliga and that the goals have poured in. It speaks for itself."

“I don’t see any competition for the goalkeeper position,” Grabara said of his return and taking the No.1 spot. He later said that he and Ryan were ‘not friends’.

And after Ryan's nightmare, Grabara tweeted: "Must have been politics, for sure." The tweet accompanied with a smiling emoji hinted that Ryan lost his spot to him at club level because of skill.

Speaking to Fox Sports after the match, and being told of Grabara's tweet, Ryan said: "I'm not surprised he did, to be honest. It doesn't really concern me."

Ryan's response was classy, but football fans certainly took aim at Grabara for the low blow.

Jackson Irvine devastated after World Cup loss

There were tears in the eyes of the Australian players after the heartbreaking loss. Aussie star Jackson Irvine fronted the media in tough scenes as he praised his teammates.

"We gave it everything, just like we have every minute of this competition," tearful Socceroos midfielder Jackson Irvine said pitchside. "(It was) just not enough on the day."

The Australians leave Qatar after their best overall performance at the World Cup, with two wins in a single edition of the tournament for the first time. But, just as the only other Socceroos team to advance from the group-stage did in 2006, they depart at the round of 16.

Argentina will now play the Netherlands in a quarter-final on Friday night (0600 AEDT Saturday) on a blockbuster match. The Dutch earlier defeated the United States 3-1 in their knockout game.
