Father heroically steps in to save his son from a gang of thieves
A brave father is in hospital after defending his teenage son from a gang of robbers in Sydney’s west.
The 17-year-old was confronted by a gang of men outside his family’s fortune telling business in Bankstown at about 6.30pm on Thursday.
Police said there were four of them and described the gang as being of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance.
The teen said one of the men came behind him armed with a knife.
“I was very scared at that time,” he said.
But his parents stepped in and fought back.
“My dad tried to push me out and he just cut my dad’s hand,” the boy said.
The father, 55, was stabbed in both hands before chasing down the armed suspect through the arcade.
Unfortunately, he lost sight of him in a laneway.
Detective Inspector Jeff Hohnen said the family was hardworking and just trying to run a business.
“He (the father) is certainly very brave,” he said.
The 55-year-old is currently undergoing surgery.

Police are still searching for the gang but believe it was an opportunistic crime and probably didn’t expect the family to fight back.
The 17-year-old said it was unlikely his family would be sticking around though and they would probably move somewhere else.
Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page.
