Father and son kill each other after dispute over dogs

A father and son have shot each other dead, following a dispute over two dogs being shot.

Kelvin James Coker, 60, and his 32-year-old son Kelvin Nicholas Coker were killed last weekend in Washington County, Alabama.

The father first shot his son with a pistol, before the son fired back with a shotgun, WPMI reported.

"It all started with a dog being shot. The father come down and confronted the son, and it went from that point to both being fatally wounded,” Washington County Sheriff Richard Stringer said according to WPMI.

Before the fatal shooting, Kelvin Nicholas’ brother confronted him about shooting their father’s dog. He then reportedly threatened to kill the brother.

WALA reported he had started shooting at the family dogs after one of them messed with his girlfriend’s young child.

After the confrontation between the brothers, the senior Kelvin pulled up to his property and that’s when the two drew their guns.

"Nicholas pointed his shotgun at his father and his father then... who was seated in his vehicle drew his handgun, fired a shot and struck Nicholas,” Chief investigator for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Blake Richardson told WALA.

The news station reported Kelvin Nicholas was shot in the torso and then shot his father in the neck.

Both men died at the scene.

WALA also confirmed the Sheriff’s Department had been called to the family’s property numerous times over the years, responding to violent incidents.

WPMI reported deputies had responded to a call from the family’s home just days before the shooting took place.
