Family's plea to find out what happened to brother murdered 18 years ago
A $1 million reward is being offered to solve the murder of a Victorian man who died 18 years ago.
Terrence Black’s body was found on June 16, 2000 in the Little Yarra River at the back of a rural property on Little Yarra Road in Gladysdale, east of Melbourne.
It was more than a month later that Victoria Police said the “last reliable sighting” of Mr Black, 59, happened on May 5.
He was seen in the carpark of a supermarket liquor store in Yarra Junction.
In an appeal to the public to find Mr Black’s killers his brother, Steve, said he “doesn’t deserve to be laying in the grave while (the people responsible) are walking around free”.
He added his brother was “unassuming” and “wasn’t a violent man”.
“Unfortunately, he came across these mongrels who’ve taken it upon themselves to take his life,” Steve said.
“We won’t cop that.”
Mr Black’s sister Pam Garamszegi recalled the day the family had to identify the 59-year-old’s body and they had to tell their 89-year-old father that his son had died.
“It was very, very sad and our father was never the same after that,” she said.
Homicide Squad officer-in-charge Detective Inspector Tim Day said Mr Day’s family “have had to live with the thought that those responsible for his death are still out there” for the last 18 years,.
“The offenders have been able to go on with their lives, but Terrence’s family has had to live without a brother and a father,” Det Insp Day said.

“Detectives have spoken to several people over the years who remain persons of interest in relation to Terrence’s murder, however we also strongly believe that there are other people out there who hold information vital to solving this case.
“Eighteen years is a long time for them to live with this knowledge.”
At the time of his death, Mr Black was a pensioner and lived at the Yarra Junction caravan park.
He had been married and later divorced. He had a son and a daughter.
During the course of the investigation, police received information the 59-year-old may have been murdered in a toilet block at the Yarra Junction football ground off Warburton Highway on May 5.
“We’re keen to speak to anyone with knowledge of how Terrence’s body came to be in that location or noticed any suspicious activity in the area around that time,” Det Insp Day said.
“Any piece of information could prove crucial in solving this case.”
