Family of Bourke Street stabbing victim thank 'wonderful' customers and police

The family of a popular Melbourne restauranteur who was killed in the Bourke Street terror attack has thanked all the “wonderful people” who have paid their respects to the 74-year-old.

Sisto Malaspina was walking down Bourke Street just a few hundred metres from his business Pellegrini’s restaurant when he was caught up in the horrific attack on Friday afternoon.

In the wake of his death, hundreds of tributes including flowers and cards have since been left on the footpath outside the establishment he ran for 40 years with staff passing on messages to his family.

“We would like to thank Dad’s friends, customers, and all the wonderful people that have come forward to pay their respects and show their love and support,” a family statement released on Monday afternoon read.

“We are deeply moved by all the flowers, gifts and condolences. To the people of Melbourne, your heartfelt tributes have shown us why our Dad loved this great city so much.”

The family also spoke of their appreciation for the emergency services and the personnel first to the scene.

“To the emergency services personnel; our gratitude and appreciation for all your hard work and efforts,” the statement said.

“Especially the first responders and police that put themselves in harm’s way to protect others, your bravery and heroism is a representation of the strength and solidarity of our community.”

Mr Malaspina remembered as a ‘larger than life character’

Mr Malaspina was described as a “larger than life character” and his generous and selfless personality made him a popular figure within the community.

“Each customer of Dad’s was given the same respect and service regardless of their standing in society. To him everyone was special.

“His love and passion for his customers remained the same for over 40 years,” the family continued.

“To him it was a joy to go to work every day.”

Staff at Pelligrini’s have since vowed to continue Mr Malaspina’s legacy at the store – with many remembering him for his choice of vibrant clothes.

“He was a distinctly recognisable figure in his colourful choice of clothing and his flamboyant personality. To us he was just a beautiful man, a loving husband and a doting father,” the statement concluded.

Premier Daniel Andrews had earlier offered the family a state funeral, which Victoria Police confirmed they have “gratefully accepted”.

The family also confirmed Pellegrini’s would be opening on Tuesday in a limited capacity.
