SINGAPORE — A man accused of impersonating a female gynaecologist in order to cheat a woman into sending photos of her breasts is said to have cheated 29 other victims into sending photos of their private parts.
Ooi Chuen Wei, 36, who was first charged last Saturday for cheating one woman, was on Friday (19 November) handed nine fresh charges involving nine women.
All the offences involving the ten women are said to have occurred between April last year and October this year. In total, they allegedly sent Ooi 263 photos of their breasts and groin areas over multiple occasions, including one victim who sent 50 images over 12 occasions. Seven of the victims are said to have sent him 41 videos of their private parts.
In the second mention of Ooi’s court case on Friday, the court heard that 29 more victims were revealed. More forensic evidence will be extracted from Ooi's seized devices.
The police earlier said that on 24 July, it received a report of Ooi allegedly inviting a woman to join a campaign to raise awareness for women’s health. The request for the photos was “under the pretext of medical diagnosis and research purposes”.
The Malaysian allegedly created a Facebook user profile in the name of "Dr Janice Lee Yan Hooi", a gynaecologist from “Gleneagles Medical Singapore”. A check of the online registered healthcare professionals registry failed to turn up any trace of the supposed doctor.
Responding to a query from Yahoo News Singapore, an IHH Healthcare Singapore spokesperson clarified that "Gleneagles Medical Singapore" is not one of its business entities. IHH Healthcare Singapore, which manages Gleneagles Hospital, also does not have a doctor named Janice Lee Yan Hooi, the spokesperson added.
The women’s identities are protected under a gag order.
Ooi is currently in remand. His case will return to court on 16 December.
If convicted of cheating by personation, Oon can be jailed up to five years, or fined, or both.
