Ex-AFL doctor convicted on pill scripts

A Melbourne doctor who once worked for an AFL club has been spared jail after he prescribed thousands of sedatives and sleeping pills to a couple without medical need.

Former Western Bulldogs doctor Richard Vucinic, 41, prescribed nearly 6000 Diazepam and Alprazolam tablets to James Turner and his girlfriend Elise Bertola in 2013.

Vucinic was on Wednesday sentenced to an 18-month community corrections order and 250 hours of volunteer work after pleading guilty to prescribing drugs of dependence without therapeutic need.
