If Donald Trump returns to the White House in January 2025, European countries will have to assist Ukraine in its war against Russia without U.S. support, French President Emmanuel Macron said during a visit to Sweden on Jan. 30.

According to Le Monde, Macron stated that "we have to be ready to support Ukraine, no matter what happens." The French president called on Europe to make "fair and courageous decisions," even "innovative" ones in the coming months, to "accelerate" and enhance military support for Ukraine.

Macron also appealed to Europeans to support Ukraine "in the long term" and compensate for any potential reduction in U.S. assistance.

"We must be the ones deciding for ourselves, not delegate this task to the great powers, even if they are very good allies because they are on the other side of the ocean," the president said.

Macron added that Ukraine is a European country; hence, its sovereignty directly impacts Europe’s security.

“Ukraine is on European land, it is a European country; and if we want a peaceful and stable Europe, we must be reliable in terms of security and defense for all our neighbors,” he said.

Trump repeatedly claimed that he would swiftly end Russia’s war against Ukraine within 24 hours if re-elected as president. Additionally, he expressed willingness to “allow” Russia to take over parts of Ukraine, arguing that Washington is providing Ukraine with excessive weaponry.
