Ethel Kennedy Laid to Rest Next to Husband RFK 1 Month After Her Death

The widow of Robert F. Kennedy died on Thursday, Oct. 10 at the age of 96

Ethel Kennedy has been laid to rest next to her husband, Robert F. Kennedy at Arlington National Cemetery, one month after her death.

Her daughter, Kerry Kennedy, shared photos from the funeral service in a touching Instagram post on Monday, Nov. 25. The photos showed Kerry and her siblings, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., by their mother's casket.

"Today, Mummy was laid to rest next to Daddy at Arlington National Cemetery. Her extraordinary life and enduring legacy will continue to guide and inspire us. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this time," she wrote.

Kerry announced Ethel's Thursday, Oct. 10 death in a statement on X, writing at the time that she died at age 96 "from complications related to a stroke suffered last week."

Kerry remembered her mother as a "devout Catholic and a daily communicant" and asked her followers to keep Ethel in their "hearts and prayers."

"We are comforted in knowing she is reunited with the love of her life, our father, Robert F. Kennedy; her children David and Michael; her daughter-in-law Mary; her grandchildren Maeve and Saoirse; and her great-grandchildren Gideon and Josie," her statement continued.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also shared the news on X, remembering Ethel as a "role model for self-discipline, for resilience, and for self-confidence."

"She deeded to each of her 11 children her love of good stories, her athleticism, her competitive spirit, and the deep curiosity about the world, and the intense interest in people of all backgrounds, which caused her to pepper everyone she met — from cab drivers to presidents — with a relentless cascade of questions about their lives," his statement continued. "She also gave us all her love of language and for good storytelling. I credit her for all my virtues. I’m grateful for her generosity in overlooking my faults."

Her death occurred two days after grandson Joe Kennedy III announced in a Tuesday, Oct. 8. post on X that she had "suffered a stroke in her sleep" and was "brought to an area hospital, where she is now receiving treatment."

Ethel's memorial service was then held nearly a week after her death at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle on Wednesday, Oct. 16, with several of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in attendance.
