Escapee wombats found after two days on the run

Three wandering wombats in South Australia have been found alive and well, bringing a frantic two-day hunt to an end.

Tatiana, Coconut and Phinger escaped from their enclosure at Wombat Awareness Organisation sanctuary at Flaxley, in the Adelaide Hills, on Saturday night after their refuge was broken into and the gate left ajar.

Concerned staff at the sanctuary took to social media in a bid to relocate the missing marsupials.

“Sadly, three of our darlings went walkabout,” the sanctuary wrote on Facebook, pleading for residents to keep an eye out for the escapees.

On Sunday morning their first discovery was reported to police by a resident saying a wombat was knocking at their door.

They claimed when they opened the door, the wombat, Tatiana Boganova, waltzed in and jumped in their bed.

Coconut’s adventure took him further afield – 15km to be precise, at a home in Hahndorf.

He was rescued after stumbling in front of his rescue vehicle after a homeowner said he was lurking around their property.

“He crossed in front of the wombat rescue car in the main street – We couldn’t believe it that he had picked the exact right car to walk in front of,” sanctuary worker Courtney White told News Corp.

And the news they’d been waiting for arrived on Monday when their baby girl Phinger was found at a Macclesfield home.

The sanctuary thanked the efforts of the community for the quick return of their wombats.

“We have had such an amazing response from you all and I can not thank you enough,” they wrote on their Facebook page on Tuesday.
