Escape into fantasy with La Clique, the first international act since circuit breaker

SINGAPORE - Entertainment is a type of self-care that isn't as often talked about. Performers and artistes spend years perfecting their craft so that they can take their audience – yes you – away into a fantastical world, putting your worries on hold for the duration of the performance.

As Henry Moore once said, "The soul cannot thrive in the absence of art." In Singapore, it's been 18 months since life was disrupted and the art that many enjoy – movies, theatre, performances, live bands, music playing in bars/restaurants – have all suffered varying levels of restrictions, as did our collective mental wellbeing.

Arts and live entertainment are back cautiously to great demand, such as the sold-out Kumar's standup show at Marina Bay Sands, Love, MICapella live in concert, and finally, an international act that has survived four postponement to arrive in Singapore, La Clique.

La Clique is the first theatrical performance featuring an international cast to return to the venue since Singapore’s Circuit Breaker in April last year. Running for a limited season from 22 September to 7 November at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre, the show is a combination of circus, comedy, and contemporary cabaret variety, set to a live soundtrack by the four-piece La Clique Palais Orkestra.

The expo venue will be transformed into an immersive 360-degree space that can accommodate up to 250 per show, spaced out via two-seaters, which means that a family of more than two will need to sit separately.

Yahoo Life Southeast Asia was there on the media preview during Mid-Autumn Festival, so here's a quick snap of what went down.

La Clique Singapore boasts an impressive line-up of acts. Be entertained by emcee Bernie Dieter, also a world-renowned cabaret artist, songwriter and performance artist described as the “undisputed Queen of punk cabaret”, who will be introducing the various entertainers on the lineup and entertaining us with her vocals throughout the show.

Sword swallower and fire breather Heather Holliday is the showstopper, always garnering the loudest applause with her death-defying acts.

Acrobat Oscar Kaufmann will be performing La Clique’s celebrated “Bath Boy” routine to an intense soundtrack. Front rows might get splashed by the droplets as he swerved and undulate between bathtub and mid-air.

That's not all. Trapeze performer Elke performed a rousing mid-air dance that tugged at our heartstrings; professional Hula Hoop artist and entertainer Lisa Lottie brought a lot of fun in between the acts; while acrobatic roller-skating duo The Skating Willers, turned heads with their mind-whirling set.

“As a leading entertainment destination, supporting events like these represents a significant step towards reviving the show-going experience at Marina Bay Sands and in Singapore,” according to Marina Bay Sands’ Senior Vice President of Resort Operations, Paul Town.

To ensure the safety and well-being of all guests, Sands Expo will be implementing several measures before, during, and after each performance. These measures include temperature screening and SafeEntry check-in via TraceTogether token or app, stepped-up cleaning and sanitisation of the venue, and deploying Safe Distancing Ambassadors to ensure safe distancing measures are adhered to.
