Entire town learns sign language to help hearing-impaired man
A hearing-impaired man received an emotional surprise when his entire neighbourhood secretly learned sign language as a show of support.
Video of Istanbul resident Muaharrem, who is hard of hearing, shows him setting out with his sister, Ozlem, on what he thinks will be an ordinary day.
But what he did not know was his sister had teamed up with Samsung to teach the locals sign language and set up cameras around neighbourhood. The whole stunt took a month of planning and was made to promote Turkey Samsung’s new video call centre for the hearing impaired.
As Muaharrem walks around, his neighbours begin greeting him and saying phrases in sign language. One offers him an apple and another apologises for bumping into him.
Muaharrem is confused and asks his sister: “What’s going on?”
At the end of the video he is moved to tears by the efforts of his community.
