England produced a thrilling fightback to claim a dramatic three-wicket victory in the first Test against Pakistan at Emirates Old Trafford.

Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes shared a crucial sixth-wicket stand of 139 in the hosts' second innings to seal the win late on day four.

Joe Root's side at one stage had slipped to 117-5 in pursuit of 277 after Pakistan - who made 326 first time around - had been bowled out for just 169 earlier on Saturday morning.

The tourists will be bitterly disappointed that they could not convert their first-innings lead of 107 into an opening win in the three-match series.

Here, Standard Sport's cricket correspondent Will Macpherson hands out first-Test ratings to the England players...

Rory Burns - 5

Two low scores. In the second innings, looked totally untroubled then got out, which is a habit. Copped some chat from Pakistan.

Dom Sibley - 6

Batted well in second innings before careless dismissal sparked a collapse. He and Burns will have to learn fast against tricksy attack. Fine run out on third day.

Frustrating. Battled hard in first innings then gave it away, and looked superb in second before getting out. Captaincy was very suspect on second day, but England have won their last six Tests under him.

Ben Stokes - 6

Two low scores and a dropped catch. But unexpectedly popped up with two wickets late on day three that kept England in the game. Always finds a way to contribute, but should play as an all-rounder next week.

A superb counter-attack in the first innings was the key reason England got as close as they did to Pakistan’s 326.

Jos Buttler - 8

A very mixed bag. Costly misses of Shan Masood in the first innings contributed to England going behind in the game, but batted well twice. 75 in the chase was a masterclass.

Chris Woakes - 9

England’s best player and rightly named man of the match. Did not get to use the new ball, his speciality, but was England’s most consistently dangerous and parsimonious bowler, and deserved more than four wickets (although they were all big ones).

Then was just brilliant in the chase.

Buttler’s keeping cost him wickets, and he remains a major work in progress. Not yet a go-to man for his captain, or a huge threat.

Jofra Archer - 6

His claim that this was not a pitch to bend your back on was not quite in keeping with what we saw from Pakistan. Bowled nicely enough but did not provide England with a point of difference.

Stuart Broad - 8

Just keeps taking wickets – and scoring runs! Is bowling very consistently, and now has 22 wickets this summer.

James Anderson - 5

Bowled better than his figures suggest and was unlucky to see Stokes drop a catch off his bowling.

But ultimately managed just one wicket and only bowled one outstanding spell, on the second morning. Looks very likely to rest next week.
