Eerie moment empty kayak is found floating off coast

Mysterious photos have emerged of an empty fishing kayak which was found floating with no one inside.

The vessel was spotted on the northern side of Whangaparaoa, north of Auckland, New Zealand on Monday about 10.30am local time.

“Upon arrival, police noticed several items of fishing equipment was still fixed to the kayak,” a police spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia.

The Police Maritime Unit and Coastguard searched the Stanmore Bay area, where it was found, and made a number of enquiries to find the owner.

Luckily, the owner of the kayak was found safe and well.

“Thanks to members of the public who came forward with information, we were able to track down the owner,” police said.

Whangaparaoa is known as a popular weekend getaway destination.

Pods of dolphins and orcas are known to inhabit the area off the coast.
