Liverpool are expected to make a big move to sign a new attacker in the close season and former Reds striker Emile Heskey believes Timo Werner is the perfect fit.

The Merseyside club are well clear at the top of the Premier League and need only six points more to secure the title – if they are allowed to finish the currently interrupted campaign.

Regardless of that, with Africa Cup of Nations involvements next season for Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, along with the regular demands placed on the front three of that pair plus Roberto Firmino, a new signing seems among the priorities for Jurgen Klopp, Michael Edwards and the rest of the club’s decision-makers.

Heskey, in a column for GentingBet, said that German forward Werner has the right blend of youth and experience to make an immediate difference at the top of the table.

“Timo Werner is a young player who has done phenomenally well,” he said.

“When you’re bringing in young players, you want ones that are tried and tested, who know what it takes to perform at the top level.

“Those players are always going to be an asset. Werner looks phenomenal – his pace looks great.

“Klopp obviously knows a lot about the German league as well, so I’m sure he’ll be keen to get his teeth stuck into him.”

Werner has scored 27 goals in all competitions this season for RB Leipzig, who are in the hunt for both the Bundesliga title and the Champions League.

Shortly before the postponement of major football competitions earlier this month, Werner had repeatedly praised the management style of Klopp and the qualities that Liverpool’s team possesses.
