Elon Musk has called the Australian government fascists over its attempts to tackle misinformation spread on social media.

Under the proposed laws, the misinformation legislation would give the communications watchdog powers to monitor and regulate content on digital platforms.

If the platforms don't comply, they could face penalties and fines of up to 5% of their global revenue.

Taking to X, Musk responded to a post about Australia's proposal with one word.

Fascists politician Bill Shorten believes Musk is inconsistent with his opinions, telling today when it's in Elon's commercial interests, he is the champion of free speech.

When he doesn't like it, he's going to shut it all down.
