Ellen DeGeneres has responded to backlash after being widely criticised for socialising at a football game with George W Bush.
Following the emergence of a photo showing her chatting and laughing with the former president and his wife, Laura Bush, at the Dallas Cowboys football game, she addressed online critics who took issue with their apparent closeness.
Thousands were outraged that she appeared to be getting chummy with someone on the opposite end of the political spectrum.
In Tuesday’s episode of the Ellen DeGeneres Show, the host attempted to set the record straight and explain why she was captured in such a friendly snap with Bush, a renowned conservative Republican.
Yes, that was me at the Cowboys game with George W. Bush over the weekend. Here’s the whole story. pic.twitter.com/AYiwY5gTIS— Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) October 8, 2019
Ellen explained that she and wife, Portia de Rossi, were guests of Charlotte Jones, the daughter of the Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, and happened to be seated next to the former president.
She argued unfair scrutiny was placed on her, saying that although there were 100,000 people in the stadium for the game, “they showed a shot of me and George laughing together — and so people were upset”.
She followed by saying that forging ties across the political divide was both essential and commendable.
“Here’s the thing. I’m friends with George Bush,” the host said.
“In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have. We’re all different, and I think we’ve forgotten that that’s OK that we’re all different.”
Ellen wrapped up saying, “but just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be friends with them. When I say, ‘Be kind to one another,’ I don’t only mean the people that think the same way that you do. I mean be kind to everyone. Doesn’t matter [who].”
The outrage kicked off after Ellen was photographed on Sunday (local time) watching the Dallas Cowboys with none other than the former US president.
The two were filmed and photographed laughing together in a private box, sparking strong reactions from her fans on Twitter.
People were shocked to see Ellen, one of the country’s favourite lesbians, hanging out with a man who backed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.
“Ellen DeGeneres selling out big time,” one fan wrote.
Even after the famous “gay Hollywood liberal” shared her explanation in a clip to Twitter, she continued to be slammed.
“‘Look, I’m too rich for his decisions to really affect me’, is what this boils down to,” one angered fan wrote in a reply.
“Rich democrats and republicans are way more united than the rest of us and that is by design,” another added.
“It’s called class solidarity. They have it. The rest of us need to find it,” someone else argued.
