An elderly woman has died in a house fire in Sydney's southwest.

The Macquarie Fields house went up in flames early on Sunday morning, with emergency services called about 12.45am.

The single-level brick and tile house was well alight by the time they arrived, police say.

A 45-year-old woman escaped from the home but told neighbours her mother was still inside.

Two men attempted a rescue and kicked in the back door but were unsuccessful.

When the fire was extinguished, the body of a woman was found in the kitchen. She is believed to have been in her 70s.

The house was destroyed.

Five people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, police say.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
