An elderly Sydney man is due to face court over the alleged attempted stabbing murder of his neighbour.

Police say the 77-year-old man got into an argument with a 50-year-old man at a unit block in Miranda, in Sydney's south, on Saturday.

The younger man was stabbed numerous times and taken to St George Hospital where he had surgery. He is in a stable condition.

The older man has been charged with attempted murder and wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He is expected to face Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.
