Eight Chinese abducted from Congo mine

Eight Chinese citizens were kidnapped during an attack on a gold mine in eastern Congo that left two people dead, according to a local official.

Aime Kawaye, an administrator in the community of Mukera, said on Sunday that two Congolese security guards also died in the attack.

Congo is rich in minerals, which has attracted large amounts of Chinese investment. However, many Congolese are growing disenchanted with the Chinese presence.

Former Congolese president Joseph Kabila signed a $US9 billion ($A12 billion) deal that guarantees Chinese companies access to Congolese natural resources in exchange for infrastructure investment.

President Felix Tshisekedi recently said that the deal must be reviewed.
