The first chilling photograph of a freezer where three children died after become trapped has been released by police.

The young children, aged one, four and six, were playing in a backyard in Live Oak, Florida, on Sunday when they climbed into the unplugged freezer and accidentally became locked inside.

A new photo of the scene shows an open yard with a small white chest freezer sitting in the middle.

Children’s bikes and toys can be seen strewn about the yard just metres from the appliance.

According to police, a woman was outside with the children but went inside to use the bathroom.

When she came out and couldn’t find the children, she alerted another woman and the pair began searching the property for the kids.

After half an hour of searching, the women found the children inside the freezer, unresponsive.

They administered CPR and called an ambulance, but tragically the children could not be revived.

Police are investigating the incident, but don’t believe foul play is involved.
