Get an Echo Dot for 99 cents when you subscribe to Amazon Music for just one month

This is Amazon's third-generation Echo Dot, which looks like a hockey puck but is way smarter than one.

Quick: Check the couch cushions. If you can scrounge up 99 cents, you can get a 3rd-generation Amazon Echo Dot smart speaker.

OK, you'll need more than just that loose change; the Dot is available at that price when you subscribe to Amazon Music Unlimited for at least one month. Price for that: $10, unless you're an Amazon Prime subscriber, in which case it's $8. Still an absolute steal, considering the Dot originally sold for $40 and currently costs $20.

(Not a Prime subscriber? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day Amazon Prime trial here. Note, however, that you may not be able to take advantage of promotions like this one unless you have a paid Prime subscription.)

What's the catch? This offer is available only to first-time Echo device buyers, meaning if you already own, say, a Dot or an Echo Show, you're not eligible.

There's also this caveat: Your subscription to Music Unlimited is auto-renewing, so after you pay for the first month, you'll start getting billed automatically for each additional month — unless you cancel, which you're free to do at any time. That means you could sign up for this deal, pay your $11 (or $9, with Prime) for the Dot and a month of Music Unlimited, then walk away.

Of course, you may not want to. Music Unlimited is Amazon's music streaming service, its answer to the likes of Spotify and Apple Music. With it, you can listen to zillions of songs on just about any device: phone, tablet, PC, Fire TV and so on. However, Apple Music and Spotify cost $10 per month; as noted, Prime subscribers can get Music Unlimited for $8.

As for the Dot, it's the little hockey puck-shaped smart speaker that brings the Alexa voice-powered assistant into your home. Ask her for anything: news, weather, music (natch), podcasts and so on. She can also control any compatible smart-home devices you may have. ("Alexa, turn off the bedroom lamp.")

If you're not interested in the Dot but like the sound of, er, music, here's another option: New subscribers can get three months of Music Unlimited for free (with automatic billing kicking in after that, again unless you cancel).
