Easy ways to cut back on petrol consumption as prices rocket toward $2 a litre

Motorists should get used to high petrol prices, with warnings some petrol stations could soon breach the dreaded $2 a litre mark.

We spoke to Peter Khoury from the NRMA who gave us some simple tips and tricks to keep petrol use down, and therefore save more money.

Keep weight down
Your car will consume up to 25% more fuel when it’s full than when it’s empty. Remove the contents from the boot and back seat, and don’t fill it up with petrol to capacity.

Get your engine checked and serviced regularly
Making sure your car is performing the way it should could save you from wasting fuel.

Remove Roof Racks
You’ll enjoy a 5% drop in fuel consumption when you remove your roof rack due to the drag they cause.

Turn the air-conditioning off
The aircon uses quite a bit of fuel, so only use it when absolutely necessary.

Close The Windows And Sunroof
This reduces the ‘drag’ and make the car as sleek as possible.
