After three games without a win, East Bengal got the job done against Indian Arrows with a 3-1 result in the I-League match held on Monday at the Cooperage Ground in Mumbai.
The Red and Golds are sixth on the table, with 15 points from 12 matches whereas Arrows are at the bottom, with eight points.
East Bengal looked hungry for a breakthrough right from the off and they broke the deadlock just four minutes into the game. A failed clearance allowed Jaime Santos to pounce inside the box. The Spaniard fired a thunderous strike into the net to put his team a goal ahead.
Vikram Pratap Singh nearly scored an equaliser at the other end of the pitch a minute later. He picked up the ball from the left flank, cut in and sent his effort inches wide of the post.
Indian Arrows continued their attempts to pass their way into the East Bengal box but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Ayush Adhikari's free-kick from the edge of the box was dealt with easily by the keeper midway through the half.
The developmental side was gifted with a chance to equalise soon after the restart when Ajin Tom's strike hit Abhash Thapa's hand inside the box. However, Vikram, who stepped up for the resulting penalty, struck wide from 12 yards and wasted the chance.
The young Indian striker soon made amends for his miss with a neat finish past the keeper in the 55th minute. Ayush released Vikram into space down the left flank. The latter took the ball into the box and found the net with just the keeper to beat and made it 1-1.
East Bengal switched gears and piled pressure on the inexperienced Arrows defence. Their efforts were rewarded after the hour-mark and East Bengal regained their lead by making use of their superiority from set-pieces.
In the 62nd minute, an East Bengal corner was met by Asheer Akhtar at the far post who tapped the ball home from close-range to give the Kolkata-based club the lead once again. Five minutes later, Lalrindika Ralte found the net from Jaime Santos' corner and it turned out to be enough for East Bengal to secure an important win.
