WATCH: Drunk man's brush with death after falling in front of train

A drunken man miraculously survived after falling onto train tracks in Sydney’s inner west before somehow managing to avoid an oncoming train.

CCTV footage from Burwood station at about 1.45am on May 18, shows the 40-year-old man stumbling towards the edge of the platform before stepping off and crashing onto the tracks.

The man is then faced with a split-second decision as a train begins to pull into the platform.

The heart-stopping clip, obtained by Nine News, shows the man left with no option but to try and squeeze under the platform as the train approaches.

Miraculously he finds enough space to avoid any major injuries.

While the man was relatively unscathed, emergency services were faced with a complex and lengthy rescue before eventually freeing the man and transporting him to hospital in a stable condition.

From analysis of the footage, crews believe he may have been attempting to step onto a train which had arrived at the station on the other side of the tracks.

Transport minister Andrew Constance said the incident highlights the growing problem the rail network is facing due to “drunken fools”.

“It’s just stupidity. We want people to use public transport if they have had the odd drink at a function or what have you but don’t turn up smashed on the network,” he told Nine News.

Mr Constance said about 300 services had been delayed across the state due to alcohol-related incidents.
