Incredible footage captures shark feeding frenzy off Queensland coast

Incredible footage has been taken of sharks feasting on schools of baitfish off Queensland’s North Stradbroke.

About a dozen sharks were filmed enjoying a buffet of baitfish that stretched more than 100 metres in the shallows. It drew sharks, birds and humans for a closer look.

Shark expert Daryl McPhee said “sharks will feed on prey that are abundant and easy to catch and those baitfish were certainly in a predicament”.

“North Stradbroke Island has a healthy ecosystem and it does have a history of unprovoked shark bites,” he said.

Mr McPhee added people should stay away when “there are feeding sharks clearly in the area”.

It is hard to tell from above but experts believe the feast was shared by an array of shark species.

North Stradbroke Island’s shark population has proved deadly in the past too. In 2006, a 21-year-old woman was attacked by bull sharks.

But most of the east coast will now turn to whale watching season, which starts next month.

Humpbacks have already been spotted off the New South Wales coast and some further north.

Sea World’s Tacha Mulligan said 34,000 were expected to swim up the coast this year and “you’re always going to have a few that come up a little early”.
