Driver's move to avoid cyclists proves costly

A Perth driver caught behind a group of cyclists at a set of traffic lights has made a costly error by trying to get past them.

Footage filmed on one of the cyclist’s Cycliq cameras shows the driver stuck behind the riders at a junction on Tydeman Road in Fremantle on Tuesday morning.

The driver wants to go straight on, but the cyclists are waiting to turn right.

The motorist decides to switch lanes, but fails to see an oncoming rubbish truck.

The car’s bonnet clips the truck, sending it back towards the cyclists and narrowly missing one rider’s standing leg.

Another cyclist wheels away to avoid collision.

The clip comes just a week after footage of two cyclists not using a cycle lane in NSW lane went viral.

While the driver, who filmed the clip while he drove down the vacant path, was charged with several offences, there was strong support for him online.

Many suggested the cyclists should be punished for not using the provided path.

It turns out however, the path was shared with pedestrians and the cyclists in question were off-duty police officers.
