The P-plater only got his licence two months before making a mistake that has cost him dearly.
Police have detailed how a driver's false move in front of cops has cost him dearly just two months after getting his licence. NSW's Highway Patrol shared how the P-plater was facing a $300 fine but it became $3000 when the driver sped off in front of officers.
At about 2:40pm on Saturday, the Subaru Impreza sedan was clocked doing 116 km/h in a 100 zone in the NSW town of Raymond Terrace. But after passing cops, the driver, on his red 'P' plates reportedly sped up to 170 km/h before being checked at 156 km/h.
After slowing down, the 17-year-old — who only got his licence two months ago — was stopped by police with a "large amount of smoke coming from the engine bay." The driver handed over a Class C Provisional P1 licence to cops which is restricted to 90 km/h. The driver's move meant he was speeding by 66 km/h over the restriction on his licence.
"The male stated to police that he had an adrenaline rush and tried to evade police however when he saw police were gaining he slowed down to avoid putting other motorists at risk," NSW highway patrol said.
