Driver stranded in croc-infested swamp after crash

A Northern Territory man has been rescued from the roof of his car after he crashed it into a croc-infested swampy paddock next to the Arnhem Highway.

The driver allegedly lost control of his 4WD while trying to avoid a kangaroo and left the road about 65km south of Darwin, an NT police spokesman said on Thursday.

Officers found him sitting on the roof of his partially submerged white Honda about 1pm on Wednesday in an area known to be inhabited by saltwater crocodiles.

Fire and emergency personnel placed a ladder for the man to climb to safety on dry land while police guarded him.

He was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for a medical examination.
