Driver livestreams himself speeding at 164km/h before being caught by police

A driver has drawn the ire of authorities after causing, and live-streaming, a high-speed road crash.

The motorist was filming while driving over 160 km/h, before crashing his car in the US state of Connecticut, according to state police.

Kenneth Hofler, 23, of Middletown, was using his phone to record himself driving over the Gold Star Memorial Bridge on the weekend. Officials said he was also driving with a suspended license and shared the video on Facebook.

“The operator of this vehicle was kind enough to publicly livestream himself traveling over the Gold Star Memorial Bridge while driving at reckless speeds prior to being involved in an accident,” police said.

“Speeding and live streaming is not only dangerous, it is illegal.”

A highway patrol officer followed Hofler as he sped onto an exit, where he drove through a guardrail and rolled over.

The man’s video shows him filming the road ahead and his speedometer before losing control on the off-ramp and dropping his phone.

At the time of the crash, Hofler was free on a A$50,000 bond from an October arrest and in possession of marijuana. He was detained and taken to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Hofler has a criminal record that dates to 2014. He was issued a misdemeanor summons for reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance and possession of marijuana.
