Driver dead in NSW Pacific Highway smash

A 72-year-old man has died in a head-on collision on the M1 Pacific Highway on the NSW Central Coast after it's believed his sedan crossed onto the wrong side of the road.

The 72-year-old driver died at the scene after colliding with a ute on the highway north of Gosford at 4.30am on Thursday, police said.

The 26-year-old driver suffered minor abdominal injuries and was taken to Gosford Hospital.

It's believed the sedan was travelling northbound when it crossed into the wrong lane on an exit ramp and collided with the ute, authorities said.

Southbound lanes on the M1 near Sparks Road were closed for four hours, with drivers facing heavy delays, said the Transport Management Centre.
