Driver charged over Sydney crash death

A P-plate driver has been charged with dangerous driving causing death after an 18-year-old man was killed following a police pursuit and crash in Sydney's southwest.

Police said highway patrol officers tried to stop the driver of a Lancer shortly after 11.20pm on Thursday after the car was detected going over the speed limit.

A police pursuit ensued and a short time later the vehicle struck a power pole on Eastwood Road, Leppington, throwing both occupants from the vehicle.

An 18-year-old man who was a front-seat passenger died at the scene.

The driver, also aged 18, was taken to Liverpool Hospital under police guard for treatment for arm injuries and mandatory testing.

On Friday he was discharged from hospital and charged with nine offences including aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death while escaping pursuit, failing to stop and speeding.

He was refused bail to face Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.

Police have said a critical incident team will investigate all circumstances surrounding the crash and the investigation will be subject to independent review, with all information provided to the coroner.
