The driver of a car has suffered life-threatening injuries in a serious crash involving multiple vehicles, including a lorry.

Thames Valley Police said the the southbound A34 was likely to remain closed for several hours between Didcot and Chilton while investigations were under way.

National Highways said the southbound carriageway remained closed between A4130 at Didcot and the A4185 at Chilton.

South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) said the driver had been taken by road to the major trauma unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

The northbound carriageway has reopened after being closed earlier, National Highways said.

"The operation to turn traffic caught within the closure continues but is difficult due to location," it added.

Police have asked the public to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

A SCAS spokesperson said they had been contacted about the collision shortly after 13:00 GMT.

They said two ambulances, a paramedic team leader in a rapid response vehicle and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance helicopter attended the incident.
