Man's attempt to drive home after being caught drink driving

A drink driver has been arrested twice in an hour after he returned a blood alcohol reading four times the legal limit, then attempted to drive home.

The man, from Carrington near Newcastle, nearly smashed into officers conducting roadside breath testing on Maitland Road, Mayfield, about 9.50pm Sunday.

After returning a positive result, the 49-year-old was taken to Waratah Police Station where a further test revealed his blood alcohol was 0.198, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command shared to its Facebook page.

Police suspended his licence and issued him a Field Court Attendance Notice for Drive with High Range PCA.

A short time later, at about 10.50pm, he arrived in a taxi to his vehicle before stepping into the drivers seat and attempting to reverse it onto the footpath.

Police approached him and conducted another breath test, before once again arresting him and taking him to Waratah Police Station.

He returned the same reading of 0.198 and was issued a Bail Court attendance notice for Drive with High Range PCA and Drive whilst Suspended.

He was given bail conditions not to occupy the driver's seat of a motor vehicle.

The Command’s Facebook post took a subtle jab at the driver, using a hashtag to point out that “second time wasn’t a charm”.
