His new book, ‘On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service,’ will detail his extensive career in public health
Dr. Anthony Fauci is opening up about his professional journey.
The doctor’s memoir, On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service, will be published on June 18, 2024, publisher Viking announced on Thursday. The book will detail Fauci’s expansive and invaluable career in public health.
“I hope that this memoir will serve as a personalized document for the reader to understand better the daunting challenges that we have faced in public health over the past 40 years,” Fauci said in a statement. “I would also like to inspire younger individuals in particular to consider careers in public health and public service.”
Fauci, 83, has worked in public health for nearly 50 years. He previously served as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institute of Health, and became the NIH’s AIDS coordinator. Fauci helped spearhead the development of effective drugs to treat HIV.
On Call will detail Fauci’s Brooklyn upbringing and the scientific accomplishments throughout his career, as well as his professional relationships with various presidents. Fauci worked alongside Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush, who he worked with to address anthrax attacks in 2001, gave updates on the Ebola and Zika viruses under the Obama administration and served as the Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden from 2021 to 2022.
Fauci recently gained worldwide recognition for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic, during which he encouraged the public to follow safety guidelines and advocated for the vaccine.
“You have a devastating public health challenge in the midst of a very divisive society, in a very hotly-contested political year. You put all of those ingredients together and it's been quite challenging,” Fauci told PEOPLE in 2020, when he was recognized as one of the magazine’s four people of the year.
Fauci retired in 2022 and currently serves as a Distinguished University Professor at Georgetown University.
