Former Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff is going back to work after leaving the White House.

Emhoff is set to join the law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, resuming the legal career that he put on pause after his wife Kamala Harris was announced as the vice presidential nominee in 2020.

Based in both Los Angeles and New York, he will be an advisor to corporations, boards of directors and individuals with reputation crises.

Emhoff practiced law for nearly 30 years before stepping back to support his wife’s political ambitions. During his time in the administration, he worked to combat antisemitism and also served as an adjunct at Georgetown University for an entertainment law class.

In addition to his new legal gig, Emhoff is now a board trustee at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and will still work at the college.

Meanwhile, his wife is reportedly undecided about her next steps. Three options seem to be on the table for the former vice president—a run for California governor, a third try at the presidency, or taking a step back.

“If you’re thinking of running for president in 2028, the worst thing you can do is run for governor in 2026,” a former Harris advisor said. Since being elected as San Francisco’s district attorney in 2003, this has been her first time being a private citizen in over two decades.

Advisors have said that she would need to make her run for the governor’s seat clear by summer 2025.

The news of Emhoff’s employment comes off the heels of reports that say the couple were eyeing a home in New York City. Emhoff toured a $20,000-a-month three-bedroom apartment in the Upper West Side this month, according to Page Six. That would put the pair closer to his daughter, Ella, who lives in Brooklyn.

In the days since Donald Trump’s inauguration, the couple has been laying low in California—with Emhoff even receiving a bizarre dose of conservative backlash after grocery shopping with his wife.
